Hi, my name is Craig Thorne and for the past two years I have been the Vice President for Coleg Gwent Students Union at the City of Newport Campus.
I have achieved many things in my two terms of office, many of which have been a massive struggle with many objects to overcome to improve the student experience for the Learners at the City of Newport Campus, although in my opinion they have all been worth it. I have; -Fought and won a significant battle of politics with Newport Transport about increasing the transport services to and from the Newport Campus -Managed to get a bus shelter erected at the City of Newport campus, where previously there hadn't been one, based on the feedback from Learners |
- I have attended and actively participated in two student interview panels in which I playeda part in appointing the New Catering Company, who have undoubtedly improved catering services to the college, and most recently one that successfully appointed the manager for the new central admissions unit
- I have implemented a new policy, that was cascaded to the other four campuses, in that all Students'
Union officers should attend at least 4 hours of officer induction with the Sabbatical President and the Vice President for the campus, so that they officers have the ability and the knowledge to work for the Learners that they
represent
- I introduced the production of Staff Information Handbooks so that all staff at the city of Newport campus were
aware of what services the SU offer, my feeling is that if the staff know what we do, then so will the Learners
- I wrote the Job Description for the position of Deputy President and started, and completed, all of the constitutional changes that followed as part of that
- I actively participate and attend as many class representative forums as possible, to gather the feedback of the
Learners on what they want at the campus. I have thoroughly enjoyed my two terms in office, and would really like to not have my access limited to one single campus, I strive to make changes across all of the campuses.
In the next academic year I want to;
-ensure that the basic facilities of bus shelters and smoking shelters are pushed for, and achieved on
EVERY campus
-Ensure that YOUR students' union officers have the training and knowledge that they need to
complete their jobs
-Ensure that every single Learner at Coleg Gwent knows exactly who their union officers are
and where to contact them
-Ensure that the Students' Union is 100% democratic in all of its processes
-Ensure that opportunities to improve your learning are being organised at every campus, for example, making sure that the Students' Union organised at least two day’s worth of an Eisteddfod and that they play an active role in things such as fresher’s fair
-Ensure that not a single class rep meeting is missed by the Students' Union, whether it be attended by
Myself, The President (elect) or the Campus Vice President
- And much much more
